I had always heard great things about the doughnuts at Nord's Bakery, but I could never find the spare time to visit. I got lucky one Sunday afternoon, and my boyfriend and I navigated over to Preston Street for a doughnut or two. We walked in the shop and were in awe over the rows and rows of cookies and doughnuts that were handcrafted with perfection. I was having a hard time selecting one, but I eventually chose a long john, which has always been my favorite doughnut. The clerk was so happy to help us, and she told us what everything was when she noticed our confusion.
She said that she could give us a few samples, and then she started loading up our paper bag. When we heard the word “samples,” we immediately thought that we would receive something as big as a doughnut hole, but the clerk generously gave us the full-size doughnuts. We went to pay, but our transaction only came to a little over $2. There was a sign that said transactions with credit cards had to be $6 or more, but we did not have cash. The clerk smiled, told us that it was no problem, and then she said that we could have the doughnuts free of charge since it was our first time there. We were shocked to say the least.
We took our bag of goodies and made our way over to the dining area. The space was cozy and warm, and the walls were lined with framed newspaper clippings of awards that had been won over the years. There were also random collectibles that were related to baking. It reminded me of things that my grandmother had in her kitchen, so I just felt right at home.
The long john that I had is the one with the chocolate icing and white icing drizzle on top. It was the perfect doughnut with a sweet cream filling. My boyfriend picked out the cinnamon doughnut, and then we had an Italian cream filled doughnut and another with white icing and sprinkles. We had a few others, but we ate them as soon as we sat at our table.
We love this bakery. We started talking about coming back as soon as we walked out the door. We have never been greeted with such generosity from any kind of business, and that kind of service will definitely bring us back many times. The friendliness was totally unexpected, and I guarantee that this is the reason for how this Louisville establishment has thrived for so long. I cannot guarantee that everyone will receive free doughnuts from Nord's, but I can say that they are worth every penny.
