Trick-or-treating in my neighborhood is bigger than Christmas. This holiday, in Germantown, is not meant merely for the little ones; the older, post-pubescent set also participate in collecting candy--generally sans costume. It's almost embarrassing, watching half-men capable of growing facial hair, clothed in hoodies and jeans, holding open shopping bags begging for candy. There might be a streak of fake blood on a cheek (I hope that's what it is) or not, but the pillow cases, nonetheless, brim disgustingly with treats.
At the Louisville Zoo's "World Largest Halloween Party," this never happens. First of all, trick-or-treating is limited to children 11 and under. Second of all, it's just not as scary as Halloween in my neighborhood.
Beginning October 8-10, 5:00-8:30 PM, this family-friendly event will feature safe (and reasonable amounts of) trick-or-treating, roaming costumed characters such as Snow White and Balloo the bear, a pirate's cove, a giant talking pumpkin, an ogre's swamp, a headless horseman, and animatronic Dinosaurs in the evening. Tickets are $8.00 at the door for non-members, or can be purchased at Meijer stores for $6.50, and during the October 8-10/14-17 sessions, members are free.
Mark your calendars and don't let this opportunity pass your little costumed bandits by--it is a unique and memorable Halloween experience. Our family has found the earlier dates in October to be the least crowded, so if your kids are anything like mine and already have their costumes ready and waiting, go early. And leave Halloween night to the goblins.
