Southwest Louisville is ready for their new library to debut this weekend. It has been months and months in progress and waiting, and it is finally ready to open and be revealed to the community. On Sunday, October 5 at 2pm, the new Southwest Regional Library will host its grand opening at their new location at 9725 Dixie Highway, near the intersection of Kendall Road. The Louisville Free Public Library’s brand new, contemporary, modern, and eco-friendly Southwest Regional Library will celebrate in grand style along with the Louisville community.  The highly awaited branch of LFPL in the southwest part of the county boasts some wonderful features, such as:

    • 40,000 square feet (which is more than twice the size of the current Southwest Library).
    • It is one of three regional libraries included in LFPL’s Updated Master Plan.
    • It will serve more than 100,000 residents in the area.
    • The eco-friendly building will house more than 120,000 books.
    • The new Southwest Regional Library will be all on one level for easy access for all members of the community.

More features include community meeting rooms, a space for teens, and new technology, including self-checkout stations and touch-screen computers. One of the nicest things about the building itself are the “walls of glass and clerestory windows that fill the space with an abundance of natural light and interior glass panels that help filter the light throughout the meeting rooms and the smaller reading and study spaces.” The new Southwest Regional Library will replace the current library located in the strip shopping mall on Dixie Highway near the Gene Snyder.

You and your family are invited to celebrate on Sunday, October 5 beginning at 2pm. Expect tours of the new library, speeches from Library Director Craig Buthod and Mayor Greg Fischer, refreshments, and fun for the whole family. It is a free event, open to the entire community. LG&E is the sponsor of the grand opening.
