Cain was still alive when I first heard “Brick.” He’s the one who showed me the song. I was like 13 or something and it was my first time in a boy’s bedroom alone. (Besides my BFF Kyle’s Starry Night bedroom, but he was Baby Spice for Halloween in 2nd or 3rd grade, so.) It was innocent with Cain, no worries. There was only kissing and crying over fathers’ deaths and this brick. Then, the whole Ben Folds Five album. I was young and feeling the luckiest with all those notes in my hand. I’ve got all the change. Cain’s gone now and it’s hard to believe but I’m a wiser human because of it all. I still listen to the shared classics, remember him, and then.

After a couple years I kinda forgot Ben Folds, though the name is still my password for something. (Shhh--I’ll never tell.) Except for the random times come car ride when bitches wasn’t shit and I was rockin’ Frankfort’s small suburbs and beyond, he was never really on the stereo. Just the way it flows, you know?

Soon, friends: The reintroduction. On Saturday Jan. 31, singer songwriter Ben Folds leads the Louisville Orchestra in a night of Ben Folds favorites along with his newly composed Concerto for Piano and Orchestra. The show is directed by the orchestra’s Principal Pops Conductor Bob Bernhardt and is held in the Kentucky Center’s Whitney Hall. 8:00, sharp.

Saturday’s music will be the old, but reinvented, reimagined. Swirl of strings backing the lyrics I looked to for so long. Singing along. It’ll be the new: All that instrumental genius I’ve missed since I’ve strayed. And I’m not sure, -- how could I ever be sure -- but I think Cain might be there. Maybe in the smooth talk of a cello or violin.
