Eclectic singer-songwriter Nellie Mckay will play Headliner's Music Hall (Lexington Road) on January 25, supported by local favorite Brigid Kaelin.
Mckay has not yet hit 30, but already has starred on Broadway, scored movies as well as acted in them, put out two double-disc albums (out of five), and played Carnegie Hall. Her debut, Get Away from Me, put her on the map in 2004 – a tour de force of witty, sometimes naughty, cabaret-inspired music that dabbled in punk, jazz, big band, rock and seemingly everything in between. She followed that up with another double album, a Doris Day tribute, and her latest, Home Sweet Mobile Home, which serves up Caribbean influences and doses of reggae.
McKay is decidedly retro in her fashion choices and her music, but she contrasts it with dashes of salty language in her songs and borrowings from genres as varied as disco and country. Her double bill with Louisville's own multi-talented, quirky singer, Brigid Kaelin is a match made in heaven. In addition to guitar and piano, we might get to see Kaelin break out the accordion or musical saw. I'm also feeling a yodeling duet coming on if we're lucky.
The 18 and over show at Headliners is at 8:00 p.m. (doors at 7:00) next Tuesday, January 25. Tickets are $12 at the door and at ear-X-Tacy.
