Growing up in Louisville, I used to only have to pretend to understand sports during one season: basketball season. However, in the last few years, Louisville has slowly but surely started adding football to its collective sports mania. I mean, it’s gotten so crazy that even I have a fantasy football team this year. Yes, me.  Obviously, there’s just something about football.

So, what could be better than watching football? Or fantasy football?

    Playing football.

For the younger among us, Metro Parks is hosting a local qualifier for the NFL Punt, Pass & Kick Competition this Saturday, September 29, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Louisville Champions Park.

Open to both boys and girls in age divisions 6-7, 8-9, 10-11, 12-13 and 14-15, winners will be chosen based upon the total distance of their punts, passes and kicks. Ribbons will be given for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in each age division. In addition, winners will be eligible to compete at a regional qualifier and potentially be sponsored by one of the NFL’s 32 teams in the finals. Taking place in early 2013, the finals will be at an NFL playoff game on a date and site to be determined.

The competition is free and forms are available through the Metro Parks Athletic Office located at the Louisville Tennis Center at Joe Creason Park. Registration is also available the day of the event at Champions Park. Participants will need to show proof of age and remember, no cleats allowed!

“The Punt Pass and Kick Competition is a fantastic event enjoyed by kids across the country,” said Metro Parks Director Mike Heitz, “Metro Parks is excited to host the qualifier for this area again this year.”
