This is Part 2 of a series tracking down where Louisville watches Sunday football.
Joe's Older Than Dirt
When folks in Louisville go out to watch football, they look for three things: atmosphere, TV access, and good food and drink specials. The Lyndon area seems to have that with a moose named Joe's.
The thing about Joe's Older Than Dirt...whenever I ask someone if they've been there, they always say "I haven't been there in years!" Well, I think it's time to try it again.
Joe's Older Than Dirt sits at 8131 New LaGrange Rd, about a block from the Lyndon Lane intersection, and has been serving the neighborhood for years. With a impressively large patio (host to weekly cornhole tourneys), a Cheers-like bar atmosphere, and a large tree growing up through the floor, this place is a must-visit for the Sunday afternoon quarterback.
As stated in last week's article, most of the bars seem to carry a particular fan base. Joe's is no different, with a large Colts following meeting there every week. Off the record, Manager Stefanie says "Go Giants!" (Oops! Sorry Stefanie. Guess it's not off the record anymore!)
Watching the Game
There's plenty of room to spread out in the main bar area, which is handy, because many times it can be standing room only during Card and Wildcat games. There is a viewable TV from every direction, and they do have the NFL package, so every game is on.
There's a TV behind the Patio bar, as well. And the front room is a little more intimate, adding more of a living-room dynamic to the pigskin watching experience.
Food and Service
About the service, I will say this...I have never had a bad experience there. Even at their busiest, the bartenders and servers are some of the friendliest in L'Ville. And the crowd is always well-behaved. Well, usually. But it's always lively!
The food? Pretty good for bar fare. And the prices are reasonable. My wife's favorite is the pork tenderloin sandwich. You know the routine...a piece of fried pork tenderloin about 30 feet in diameter, on a bun. My favorite? A plate of nachos that is HUGE! The small order is enough for two or three. Their fish and chips is always a local favorite, as well. On Sundays, they offer a chicken wing and bucket of beer special for all of their patrons.
The Verdict
Everyone has their favorite place to sit for 7 hours on football Sunday. But if you want to shake it up a little, spend a few of those hours at Joe's Older Than Dirt. I'm fairly certain you won't be disappointed.
