If films imitate life then what are recent blockbusters like The Avengers, Prometheus and The Hunger Games trying to convey about the world we live in? Answer: Be ready to defend yourself. That’s where training comes in and what better way to see if you’ve got the goods than a fun 5k urban obstacle race that’s happening in Louisville. On Saturday, July 7th, Mean Streets will host their inaugural race transforming the streets of downtown Louisville into an urban obstacle course, which will make you feel like Batman in Gotham City.
Mean Streets is different from the onslaught of military-type obstacle races that have exploded over the past year around the country. One difference is it’s being held at night, which runners will be thankful for during these dog days of summer. Another difference is the obstacles are inspired from some of the best chase scenes found only in the movies. Running over parked cars, climbing through windows and jumping into a foam filled dumpster. Everything your inner child has been dreaming about.
Local business owner/entrepreneur Heath Gross developed the idea of Mean Streets after running an obstacle race last year. He says, “I chose Louisville as one of the key event cities because I’m from here and feel that this city has so much to offer. I’m proud to bring a fun event like Mean Streets here to showcase the beauty of downtown Louisville.”
Registration is still open and you can register here. Costumes are encouraged but make sure they won’t obstruct your agility to scale walls and fly through the air on a zip line. Packet pick-up will be at the corner of Chestnut St. and 2nd St. starting at 7:30pm on July 7th. Race begins at 8pm and the after party runs until midnight. Four Pegs Beer Lounge will be serving gourmet burgers and BBC beer will be flowing. Live music from Wyatt Gross & Fiends, A Lion Named Roar and Dave Mosian. Rumor has it Dave Mosian and his band mates are running the race and then headed straight to the stage to perform. You gotta see it to believe it.
