Several of my family’s favorite places to spend some time outside are offering great family fun this weekend. Starting off with the Louisville Zoo’s Friday night movie this evening, remember they are playing Madgascar 3; click here for more details. Over at Highview Baptist Church’s East Campus tonight is a “Watermelon and Water Fun” extravaganza. It’s from 6pm-9pm and organizers will have everything from water slides, water balloons, and sprinklers set up to entertain your little ones! This event is completely free, as are the hot dogs, lemonade, watermelon, and other goodies they will have on site. The event is located at 15201 Shelbyville Road in eastern Middletown. Call 502-239-7711 with any questions.

On Saturday and Sunday, the weather looks just about perfect. Why not head over to Yew Dell Gardens for the “Children in the Dell” program? These programs occur every Saturday from 10:30-noon and are free for a child with one adult admission. Kids can enjoy scavenger hunts, hiking the nature trails, explore with a backpack full of outdoor ideas, or grab a bag of books and a blanket and do some summer reading on the beautiful grounds together.  Or head off to Locust Grove for a day in the sun on one of their hourly tours of the historic grounds. They are offered daily from 10:15am-3:15am and on Sundays at 1:15pm, 2:15pm, and 3:15pm. I recently learned a lot about George Rogers Clark and his connections with Locust Grove and a visit here is on my family’s summer bucket list! Louisville Nature Center offers a nature topic each day and there is one this Saturday, July 13 from 10am-11am. It’s recommended for children 6 and up; call 502-458-1328 to register. Take a scenic drive out to Jefferson Memorial Forest or Bernheim Forest. Both of these Louisville area gems have summer programs happening throughout July and August. From the ECO Discovery days at Bernheim to the free guided hikes at Jefferson Memorial, your family will find tons of ways to have fun in the sun all weekend and summer long!
