    Bridgewater Receives Howard Schnellenberger Award

Well, University of Louisville football fans have another reason to celebrate, after the team’s star quarterback, Teddy Bridgewater has won the Howard Schnellenberger Award.

Named after former University of Kentucky hall of fame tight end, and University of Louisville hall of fame coach Howard Schnellenberger, the award has gone to the winner of the Governor’s Cup every year of its existence thus far.
And, for good reason, the Schnellenberger trophy is a Louisville slugger bat painted Kentucky blue on one side and Louisville red on the other, a nod to both programs.

This year though, the nod went the way of the Cards as the Louisville Sports Commission committee decided that the MVP award should go to the possible pro, Bridgewater.

    49 Finalists in Hornung Award

Meanwhile the award named for another area football legend, Paul Hornung, has found 49 possible finalists who exhibit the versatility associated with this prestigious honor.

Formerly the Hornung award has gone to Stanford’s Owen Marecic in 2010 and Georgia’s Brandon Boykin last year.
Of the 49 currently in the running for this year’s award is Louisville senior Adrian Bushell. Neither Kentucky nor Indiana have anybody still in the hunt for the trophy though. However, out of Hornung’s alma mater, Notre Dame is senior Theo Riddick.

The award’s mission statement makes it clear that it is intended to be a prize for the most versatile and well-rounded athlete in NCAA football, essentially the committee attempts to find the biggest work horse in the league.

By the way if you were curious about the past winners, Marecic is currently a Cleveland Brown and Boykin suits up with the Philadelphia Eagles presently.

Hornung himself is a former Heisman Trophy Winner and Super Bowl champion with the Vince Lombardi coached Green Bay Packers.

    About Dave Rose

Recently, I completed a Masters degree in Education and have been writing for Louisville.com for over a year now, prior to that I published a humor book for young adults titled Wearing Socks with Sandals, a book about getting through high school, college, and all of the requisite problems that present themselves during that time. Currently, I spend much of my time in classroom settings as well as writing in various areas. Of course, I’m a big sports fan and love music and film, and love finding new stuff around Louisville.
