For the past several years the Paul Hornung award, distributed by the Louisville Sports Commission, has honored the most versatile players in college football. This is in tribute to the Louisville legend’s own abilities in regards to being a utility athlete.
The Hornung Award’s track record has been proven solid as well, all of the finalists last year are currently playing in the NFL; Kentucky’s Randall Cobb is currently with Hornung’s old team the Packers, Texas Christian’s Jeremy Kerley currently laces his shoes up for the Jets and Owen Marecic is with the Cleveland Browns.
And this year the track record continues with the announcement of 2012's winner, Georgia's Brandon Boykin.
Other finalists included Arkansas’ Joe Adams, Oregon’s LaMichael James, and Toldeo’s Eric Page.
An event will be held in Boykin’s honor at the Galt House on February 2nd, this is the second year that the award will be distributed and throughout both years Texas Roadhouse has been the sponsor of the award which is consistently gaining traction.
Hornung, a Heisman trophy winner at his alma mater, Notre Dame, has explained the difficulty in playing multiple positions in today’s college football, further the awards’ board has explained the key word their looking for in the winner of this award in versatility.
That is, not simply playing several positions but playing several well, Hornung’s former coach, Vince Lombardi, personally noted the versatility of Hornung and so it really only makes sense that this would be the trait that Hornung would be looking for.
The initial finalists were decided by the award’s board as well as a fan vote which was tabulated as an additional vote, the same system was utilized to crown Boykin as the winner.
