As many people in this city will tell you, Louisville’s music scene has been growing and growing and getting the attention of more national outlets and touring artists.
With institutions like Forecastle, WFPK, and many music venues across town, there look to be no stopping this movement.
It was decided last year by a few select people that it was high time that all this success deserved its own celebration and they are back for another awards show this September.
The 2nd Louisville Music Awards are Sunday, September 28 at Headliners, The show starts at 7 p.m. and tickets are $10.
Producer of the LMAs and sonaBLAST! Records President Jaxon Swain says that they were glad the first year turns out as it did, but now that they have had one run through, they know what worked and what didn’t.
With that, Swain said there will be more awards this year—a move from 8 to 14. For example, last year, Swain mentioned, they had one awards entitled Roots Award, which included many genres like folk, bluegrass, and country. This year they have awards in place so they don’t force those genres to compete against each other as much.
The addition of more awards may mean less live music at the awards show, but Swain said this provides for a better flow and more recognition for the people that are playing and making music all year long.
Kyle Meredith, WFPJ DJ and Music Director, will be serving as MC again but will also get help from some celebrity presenters. One presenter Swain mentioned was Patrick Henry Hughes, the University of Louisville band member known for his appearance on ABC’s Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.
Bands to perform at Louisville Music Awards will be Billy Goat Strut Revue (last year’s Cover Band of the Year) among others.
This year’s awards show, just like last year’s, will include legacy awards for those Louisville musicians and members of the Louisville music community who has passed.
Swain said, “We learned a lot last year and we are trying to make it as fun and classy as possible for as many people as we can.”
