If you’re like me, the thought of walking 5 miles to literally nowhere or swinging your legs back and forth on an elliptical for a half hour sounds like the seventh circle of hell. Luckily for us, there are several exercise options around town that don’t feel like a complete waste of time and energy – In fact, they may actually be fun.

    Sky Zone

SkyZone is the first indoor trampoline park in the world and Louisville is lucky enough to host a location. This facility is family friendly, even offering special activities for toddlers.

On the exercise front, SkyZone offers dodgeball, fitness/aerobics and basketball dunking. Who wouldn’t want to get in their cardio for the day by jumping around on wall-to-wall trampolines?

    Pure Barre

Barre takes the ballerina bar and turns it into a full workout. Pure Barre, located in the Paddock Shoppes (formerly the Summit), is the largest chain of its kind in the U.S. Their 55-minute workout works to create lean muscles and increase flexibility through the thighs, butt, hips, abs and arms. For an hour, a few times a week, you can feel like a ballerina without all of the pressure, practice or talent.

    Hot Yoga

Hot yoga is becoming a popular form of exercise, with several studios opening up in Louisville. The workout is generally a typical yoga workout, but takes place in hot and humid conditions. The higher temperatures increase flexibility in poses and allow you to sweat until you feel like you’ve accomplished something.

    Dance class

There are so many options for dance classes in Louisville – ballroom dancing, salsa dancing, pole dancing, hip hop dancing and so on. Dance classes allow you to get a good workout in a social atmosphere while also learning a skill that can help you down the line. You know, when you’re trying to impress your new date or take part in a dance-off. And don’t worry if you’re afraid you’ll make a fool of yourself – beginners’ dance classes are full of people just like you and are taught by professionals who will work to help you, sans judgment.

    Canoeing

As summer winds down, canoeing sounds more and more appealing. There are several places in and around Louisville to take your canoe or rent one. Many places offer lesson for beginners, and those who learn can often take it on as a lifelong hobby – canoeing is something you can do while on vacation, while travelling or over the weekend. Beckley Creek Park in the Parklands is the newest Louisville spot for canoeing and can accommodate the whole family.

For many of us, working out is an activity that doesn’t fit into our schedules, our lifestyles, or our overall idea of what we should be doing. Approaching exercise from a fun and different way can change that.
