Over the weekend the Superbowl was cemented as the Baltimore Ravens upset the New England Patriots and the San Francisco 49ers eased their way into a victory against the Atlanta Falcons.
And, with that the AFC and NFC divisions both found their representatives for the biggest day of the year for football fans. Superbowl XLVII is set to commence at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans this year to plenty of fan fare. R&B superstar Alicia Keys has been signed to sing the National Anthem and pop phenomenon Beyonce will be performing at half time.
CBS will be covering the event and have already inked a deal with commentators Jim Nantz, local Louisvillian Phil Simms, Steve Tasker, and Solomon Wilcots. Advertising agencies are at a fever pitch getting their spots together- and for good reason, as this year a 30-second commercial at the super bowl will run four million dollars.
With all that said who’s going to be on the field that area residents will recognize from their college days, outside of Simms of course?
For Baltimore, Tandon Doss, is a current wide receiver on their roster, and Indiana alum. Despite a strong showing in college and pre-season the Indianapolis native hasn’t had a great deal of receptions however that doesn’t mean he won’t get the opportunity in the biggest game of the season.
Meanwhile cornerback Chris Johnson also currently suits up with the Ravens, a 2003 graduate of Louisville Johnson was without question a standout with the Cards. Originally from Texas, Johnson has been a steady in the league beginning with his initial draft to the Green Bay Packers. He was then traded to the St. Louis Rams, Kansas City Chiefs, and Oakland Raiders before finding a home in Maryland; this will be Johnson’s first Super Bowl appearance.
Meanwhile, Lexington native David Akers has been among the best kickers in the league since his entrance in 1998 with the Washington Redskins. The Louisville stand-out is a six-time pro-bowler and suits up Superbowl Sunday with the 49ers.
So, with all that said I think one has to only get the chicken wings and big screen ready for Superbowl Sunday.
