With extended ESPN coverage about the NFL (and this time it has nothing to do with Brett Favre) thoughts of football has never really ceased for the American sports fans.

And, certainly with the opening of spring practice for many college teams talk of the gridiron is only set to increase from only the union battles in the NFL. Both Louisville and Kentucky recently opened their first practices, and opened them for the general public in Louisville and Lexington respectively. Fans of both teams are welcomed to come out to take a look at how the Cards and Cats are starting off this year.

Louisville opened their season Wednesday, with a long practice that saw the beginning of Coach Charlie Strong’s second year at the Ville and a team that was embedded with injuries. Fourteen to be exact, but never one to be pessimistic Strong took this opportunity to try out players at varying positions. A tactic that worked well for Strong last year, going to the Beef O’ Brady’s Bowl at the tail end of the season; when one considers what the Cards were doing under Craigthorpe the previous years. The team will suit up for their next practice on Friday at 4:15 p.m., and again that practice will be open to the public.

Meanwhile, the other sophomore football coach in the commonwealth took the reins of Kentucky yet again in Lexington on Wednesday as well, in the Nutter Field House on the Cat’s campus. Focusing on establishing strategies coach Joker Phillips was pleased with the high energy and intensity level that he saw to open practice, a necessary intensity needed to thrive in the football powerhouse conference of the SEC. The team will take the field with full pads on Saturday, but are currently in the midst of jerseys only.

    About Dave Rose

Recently, I completed a Masters degree in Education and have been writing for Louisville.com for over a year now, prior to that I published a humor book for young adults titled Wearing Socks with Sandals, a book about getting through high school, college, and all of the requisite problems that present themselves during that time. Currently, I spend much of my time in classroom settings as well as writing in various areas. Of course, I’m a big sports fan and love music and film, and love finding new stuff around Louisville.
