    Bit to Do

I understand that the dusting of snow in a few parts of the Louisville area may confuse you but remind yourself that that snow fell Halloween night.

According to many people who have expressed frustrations, someone might want to remind Lite 106.9. Louisville’s original Christmas music station switched their programming on October 30 to strictly Christmas music.

That means Louisville will hear Christmas music on the radio station for 57 days. Lite 106.9 end Christmas music when Christmas Day is over.

All but one of Lite 106.9 Facebook posts since the changeover has spiraled into a conversation about whether the extended Christmas music coverage is excessive. Three of the posts were written so that the staff could mention the e-mail address they specifically created for these complaints. Over on the stations Twitter profile, Lite 106.9 responds to and retweets many of the “haters.” The station had not tweeted since October 17 but has been active this weekend reading and responding to the many mentions they have received.

In response to Becky Norris who said, “It’s like @Lite1069radio is the Macy’s of Black Friday, playing Christmas music like it’s 6 p.m. on Thanksgiving,” they said, “You want to go to Macy’s ?!? Who is driving? Us or you?

In response to George B. Wilson who said, “Thanks @Lite1069radio. With Christmas music before Halloween, I found an unneeded radio preset for a new station. #tooearly #DarkSide,” they said, “You’re welcome. Good luck. Come back when you feel more Yuletide-ish.”

Both platforms exhibit people who are enthusiastic about the change in music as well as those frustrated.

On Facebook, Linda Durham said, “I love Christmas music! Thank you for daring to be different! If others are offended, choose another station!”

Carla Walker, also on Facebook, said, “There are times when I can listen to Christmas music all year round.”

This is such a divisive issue for many people. Christmas, especially the music, resonates with very fond memories. Some people express that those memories are being trivialized. Some feel Halloween and Thanksgiving are run over by Christmas. Karen Schuler Ising said on Facebook, that Lite 106.9 frontloads but should really extend Christmas music past Christmas Day.

She said, “Why in the world can't it stop [sic] on New Year’s instead of Xmas?! So many are off school and work that week and I know we would listen all the time. It should be extended up to January not to other way into October! (And for those that say celebrating in this fashion should only be for Christmas day I would say my family always kept our tree up until the three wise men arrived.)”

But another Lite 106.9 points says the people should think broader than just the radio station. Becki Smith said, “No different than walking into the stores & already seeing the Christmas stuff out. Are you going to boycott the stores that already have their Christmas stuff out?”

It’s not likely that anyone’s protests will change Lite 106.9’s radio strategy, but one’s for sure, they have your attention. One user elaborates on that.

Shaunna Stier Lukemire said, “Why do you want to hear the negative feedback?? It’s a publicity stunt of course. NOT listening in my salon.”

Enjoy the holiday season, Louisville. Lite 106.9 is your go to for Christmas music station for the 57 days.
