Ever wish you could go back to a different time, before television (or the internet, for that matter) was the most popular way to see a story told? Are you a fan of radio programs such as Garrison Keillor’s A Prairie Home Companion? Want to go back to the basics of pure storytelling this December? Then Bellarmine University’s Radio Drama class has a treat for you.
Starting this Thursday, December 2 and running through Sunday, join Bellarmine Theatre for “A Christmas Carol, A Radio Show” by Charles Dickens and adapted by radio dramatist Tony Palermo. This classic, suitable for the entire family, gives the audience a taste of what it takes to create a show for radio: live music, live radio sound effects and live acting.
The production, explains Bellarmine’s Director of Theatre Carlos Chavarria, is the final project of a course in which students learn about recording, sound and radio play production. The results, he says, have been so successful, the department has produced a show every December. “The show is directed by the professor from the class, Carol Stewart, and the students are in charge of putting everything together, from auditions for actors to the sound and special effects,” he says.
But come catch it before this year’s production becomes the Ghost of Christmas Past: “Because our program is growing, it will be our last for now,” says Chavarria. “We will come back with the Radio Drama class in two years and we are planning to produce ‘It’s a Wonderful Life.’”
The shows, which will be at the Blackbox Theatre, Wyatt Center for the Arts, run December 2, 3, and 4 starting at 8 p.m., and the Sunday, December 5 show begins at 7 p.m. General admission is $5. Tickets are available at the door or by reservation at
