Today and tomorrow are the last days this summer to grab some delicious gelato from the Proof Gelato Cart, located downtown at the corner of 7th and Main Street. All summer the friendly servers of Proof on Main have been providing passersby with wonderfully creamy frozen goodness. The Gelato Cart’s season officially ends today, but it will also be out Friday evening from 5:00 to 9:00 for the First Friday Trolley Hop.
Gelato is a traditional Italian ice cream, which is different in that it contains more sugar and a lower butterfat content than its American counterpart. Proof’s gelato is handmade, the flavors of the day depending on the whims of the chef; bourbon cherry, peanut butter, Nutella, pistachio, vanilla, and lavender are a few of the options that have been available throughout the summer. My personal favorite is the blackberry basil; the pungent herbiness merges surprisingly well with the sweet tartness of the berries for an incredibly satisfying taste combination. (I have also been able to sample some other interesting flavors not sold through the cart – for example, I once tasted olive oil gelato created to complement Proof’s rosemary pound cake. It sounds strange, but it was absolutely wonderful, in a kind of weird way.)
Along with two gelato flavor options, there will also be a sorbet offered. Flavors available in the past have included green apple, strawberry lime, cranberry, and grapefruit.
The Proof Gelato Cart will be out today from noon to five. You can see what flavors will be offered at the cart’s Twitter page. Scoops are $3.00, and be sure to bring cash. Tips are always appreciated.
If you can’t make it out to the cart, do not worry: fresh made gelato is offered at Proof on Main all year long.
