Four players battling it out in a sudden death playoff in the hopes of earning over $1 Million in prize money, a big trophy and a tour win? As far as golf is concerned, it just doesn’t get better than that.
Among those competing in Sunday’s playoff during the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines in San Diego, California was Kentucky native J.B. Holmes. Trying to secure his fourth tour win, Holmes emerged with an even-par 72 in regulation.
Missing his 21-foot putt for birdie on the 18th hole, Holmes found himself in the four-man playoff with Jason Day, Harris English and Scott Stallings. English and Stallings were eliminated after paring the first playoff hole, leaving birdie makers Day and Holmes to play round two.
Unfortunately on the 16th hole his tee shot flew over the green landing in a near-impossible spot, while Day’s came to rest just inside 15 feet of the hole. After a two-putt bogey Holmes settled for second place; an improvement from last year’s finish at Torrey Pines where he tied for 23rd place.
Though the 32 year old from Campbellsville, KY overcame brain surgery in 2011 and has since dealt with elbow and ankle injuries, he still remains one of the longest hitters in golf. After Sunday’s match Holmes climbed to 35 in the latest FedExCup standings. As the PGA Tour continues to play out, there’s no doubt he’s got the Bluegrass state rooting for him.
