Next Friday, September 11, the West Louisville Youth Space (WLYS) will be holding their 19th Annual Golf Scramble at the Shawnee Golf Course (460 Northwestern Pkwy). All proceeds raised will go towards the maintenance of WLYS so that they may continue to serve kids in their after school programs and in their summer camps. WLYS is free to all, and they provide kids with tutoring, extracurricular activities, meals and field trips.

The golf scramble will kick off at 8 a.m. with team registration and breakfast, provided by Lynn's Catering, at 7 a.m. The course will consist of 18 holes, and lunch will be served around 1 p.m. Afterwards, there will be a trophy presentation to the day’s winners for first and second place as well as for fun categories like “closest to the pin” and “longest drive.”  The entire event is expected to run to about 2 p.m.

The scramble will consist of teams of four, each raising or donating $350. Individuals can also play for $90 and sponsors can donate various amounts to be a cart sponsor, hole sponsor, fairway sponsor, co-sponsor or main sponsor. Each of these sponsors receive recognition and their name on a sign or on a display along with possible goodie bags, lunch tickets and opportunities to play, depending on their level of sponsorship. All players will receive a goodie bag and a door prize as well as free drinks throughout the 18 holes. The door prizes are donated from various local companies such as the Kentucky Derby Museum, the Louisville Zoo and the Frazier Museum.

This year is particularly special because it's being held in memory of the recent passing of a long time WLYS Board member and supporter, Dave Higgins. Higgins was the Chairman of the Wine Group at Brown Forman and served for years as a WLYS board member shortly after it was founded in 1992. Higgins had a strong passion for helping WLYS and its West Louisville kids of the Shawnee, Portland and Russell neighborhoods.

Sis Von Kanel, Director on the Board of WLYS, has worked diligently to organize the event in memory of Higgins, and moreover, to bring the Higgins family together at this event. Higgins had six kids, and all four sons, two daughters and wife will be present at the scramble. Furthermore, the fours sons will be participating as a team, and it’ll be their first time of playing golf together as a family. Additionally, Von Kanel has made a personal donation as a Hole Sponsor in memory of Higgins and her past WLYS co-director, Chuck, who had also recently passed. Her sponsorship sign is anticipated to express her gratitude to these two individuals through this simple statement, “Thanks for the memories Dave and Chuck.”

Registration for teams, sponsors, and donations are still being accepted. If interested, call Sis Von Kanel at 506-776-9126.
