The Michael Maker-trained Juanita captured the 27th running of the La Troienne (GII) under the Spires of Churchill Downs on Kentucky Oaks Day. The one and one-sixteenth, $300,000 Added La Troienne for fillies and mares four years and up was the first stakes race of the busy Oaks Day Card.
Juanita, piloted by Ramon Dominguez, blew past the favored 2011 Oaks winner Plum Pretty near the five-sixteenths pole to win by two lengths over St. John's River and Rosie Napravnik.
Rafael Bejarano aboard Plum Pretty felt comfortable with the lead.
"There was no excuse," he said. "She had a good trip. There was no pressure, but she just quit in the stretch."
