Jeff Beck is a classic rock guitar God.  He is a multiple Grammy winning member of the Rock n’ Roll Hall of Fame, inducted twice; once as a member of The Yardbirds (along with Jimmy Page and Eric Clapton), and a second time as a solo artist.  He is a living legend in the music industry who has spent his fifty year career pushing boundaries and elevating the standards to which a guitarist is held.

Breaking in the mid-sixties British blues rock invasion – Beck and Clapton were the guitarists for The Yardbirds, an old fashioned, Muddy Waters blues group that had marginal success in America.  Clapton left, and they brought in a young Jimmy Page to fill in the hole in their dual guitar approach.  A year later when Beck and the other members left The Yardbirds, Page was left with the band’s debt and birthed a new blues-centric line-up that featured Robert Plant, John Paul Jones, and John Bonham, to pay the bills as “The New Yardbirds."

The band would later be re-named Led Zeppelin.

After Beck’s departure from The Yardbirds, he formed The Jeff Beck Group.  Their debut album featured Beck on lead guitar a young Ron Wood (who would later join The Rolling Stones), and an even young British singer named Rod Stewart.  Wood and Stewart would eventually leave Beck to form The Faces, before their more successful later careers.

Beck disbanded the group, and has worked primarily on instrumental albums billed to him as a solo artist, although the high octane musicians and a-list guests he’s had appear on those albums is endless.  Beck is coming to Louisville tomorrow night at Kentucky Center for the Arts, Whitney Hall.  The show begins at 7:30 PM and tickets are still available ranging from $45-$65.

    About Brent Owen

Born and raised in Louisville, I have lived here most of my life (except during a short furlough, when I, lovelorn and naive, followed a girl to Baton Rouge). My roots are here, my family, my friends, and my life are all here. I work primarily as a free-lance writer for a few local and regional publications. I have also written two books (one a memoir, the other a novel) that barring some divine intervention, will probably never see the light of day. I find myself deeply ingrained in the local bar scene, or perhaps better said, I often indulge in the local drinking culture. I love music, movies, comedy, and really just about any other live performance art.
