I've attended the Valentine’s Day Romantic Retreat (aka the Valentine's Hike) at Jefferson Memorial Forest for several years. Advertised as "Give your sweetie the moon, the stars, and all of Louisville," that's an apt description. It takes place at the Horine Conference Center at the Forest which, being the second highest spot in the county, offers an unrivaled view of Louisville from the back deck.

The moon and stars enter when you head out for the hike. No need to bring a backpack, it is a candlelit walk of about a half mile. This year, the moon will be nearly full for the hike, so unless it's cloudy it will be a real treat to hike through a moonlit woods. I recommend bringing a flashlight just in case you encounter a dark portion of the trail.

After the hike, you return to the conference center for a large selection of desserts. The cherry pies and mini-cheesecakes are standouts in my memory. Two fireplaces will be crackling and dancing with flames as you enjoy your dessert and settle in for a movie. Don't worry guys, the film selection is usually pretty good, a romance for certain, but a tolerable one. If you don't like the film there is room to snuggle up in the den or enjoy a conversation in one of the other rooms.

Dress for the weather. I've hiked through snow and cold winds, but love it every year.

This event is typically full, and is offered on two days: Sunday, February 13, 7:30 pm to 10 p.m. and Monday, February 14, 7:30 pm to 10 p.m. The cost is $25.00 per couple and reservations must be made by February 10th. Reservations can be made by calling the Forest Welcome Center at 502-368-5404.
