Not only is Jefferson Memorial Forest just 15 miles from downtown Louisville in Fairdale, it's the nation's largest municipal urban forest, and boasts 35 miles of hiking trails, horse riding trails, fishing, camping, picnic shelters, playgrounds, outdoor education programs, and more.
If you have an outdoor enthusiast on your holiday shopping list, the Jefferson Memorial Forest Holiday Open House beckons. This Saturday, December 4, 2010 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., enjoy refreshments, holiday music, exclusive holiday discounts, and keep toasty from the fire while you browse the gift shop. It's the perfect way to introduce yourself to our Forest.
If it's been a while since your last visit, the Forest is now offering a professional-quality trail map. For just a $10 donation to the Metro Louisville Parks Foundation, the map makes a great locally-centered stocking stuffer for the outdoor enthusiast on your shopping list. With the Forest trails on one side, and Waverly, Kulmer Beach, Fairmount Falls, Caperton Swamp, and Beargrass Creek Greenway on the other, the map also features scenic locations, streams and lakes, and latitude and longitude lines. As one of Louisville Metro Parks, Jefferson Memorial Forest is a living woodland memorial to Kentucky veterans who have served our country during times of war. It's located in southwest Jefferson County, and portions of northern Bullitt County, south of the Gene Snyder Freeway between I-65 and Dixie Highway.
