Smoke on the Mountain: Homecoming is set in October 1945, just after the ending of World War II. Reverend Mervin Oglethorpe is getting ready to move to Texas and preach. However, he will give one last sermon at North Carolina's Mount Pleasant Baptist Church before the younger Dennis Sanders becomes pastor. A celebration is to be had with the Sanders family at church, complete with humorous stories and songs of a Bluegrass Gospel style.
Smoke on the Mountain: Homecoming is the third musical in a trio of shows about the Sanders family. Smoke on the Mountain, the first play, features the Sanders family participating in a Saturday night sing organized by Oglethorpe.
