Buffalo Trace announced this week via an article in The Spirits Business that it is not discontinuing any bourbon brands. Supply is extremely limited right now, and many distillers have been warning of impending shortages for years. While brands like Weller 12 year and Elmer T. Lee Single Barrel will be extremely hard to come by, they will still be in production. Read more about that here.
Bourbon growth is expanding at a rate almost visible to the naked eye. Production has increased 150% in the last 15 years, which is higher than the explosive growth in spirits after the end of prohibition. Read more about that here.
Diageo broke ground for a new Kentucky bourbon distillery yesterday in Shelbyville. The $115 million project will take approximately two years to complete and will result in 30 new jobs. The distillery will product the Bulleit lines of whiskey as well as other possible future Diageo whiskey lines. Read more about that here.
Fred Minnick takes on flavored whiskeys in his blog this week. Most whiskey purists are not in favor of flavored products, arguing they are taking away from production of higher end offerings. However they are the fastest growing product in the spirits industry right now, accounting for 45% of growth in whiskey. Read more about the issue here.
Brian of the Sipp’n Corn blog took a trip to the old James E. Pepper Distillery, now home to The Barrel House Distillery. They are renovating the site and making products such as Devil John Moonshine, and they are expected to release a wheated bourbon in 2015. Read more about that here.
