CenterStage held its first performance of their last show of the season, Fiddler on the Roof, last night. This classic production was met by fans, newcomers, and everyone in between. As always, this play has the ability to transcend the audience. It picks you up and drops you right into the lives of the characters.
The story follows Tevye as he struggles to uphold the Jewish traditions of his people when his independent daughters start making their own decisions. Set in the town of Anatevka, Russia, political and social factors also play a role in the story line.
In this production, Monty Fields portrays Tevye. Though all the actors did a wonderful job with their characters, Fields’ Tevye was by far the best. He perfectly depicted a “stretched too thin” father. Even though he is constantly working and striving, Tevye is able to look past his traditions (and his better judgment) for his daughters’ happiness, and you could even see this in Fields’ eyes. It nearly brought me to tears when Tevye has a hard time accepting a daughter who decides to marry outside the faith. Everything from Fields’ voice to his exasperation to the way he walks were a perfect fit for Tevye.
Your favorite songs from this production are held in the highest honor and sung with passion and pride. “Matchmaker” is sung by Tevye’s daughter’s Tzeitel (Margo Wooldridge), Hodel (Charlotte Campbell), and Chava (Ashely Gurwell). It was a comical and lively depiction of sisters doing what they do best - teasing each other. “Sunrise, Sunset” is sung by Tevye and his wife Golde (Carol Dines) as well as the rest of the cast. It is my favorite tune from this play because it puts the parents’ thoughts about their children growing up into perspective.
With exquisite Russian dance numbers, wonderful music, comedy and family values, Fiddler on the Roof is fun for the whole family.
