I am so very done with the bi-polar weather. Is Spring here yet?
The folk at Bernheim Arboretum and Research Forest seem to think so--or they're just bull-heading their way into it anyhow. This Saturday (May 21st) Bernheim is hosting their annual celebration of Spring: BloomFest!
Returning will be the popular children's activity of building tiny Faerie houses out of items that lay around in nature. The press release states that "Berheim's Construction Zone Crew will be issuing building permits and materials for every creative contractor".
Attendees are encouraged (but not required) to come costumed as woodland faeries, elves, gnomes or flowers (if your not into the mythical bit). Those all gussied up under the age of 12 will be invited to parade with the Woodland Faerie Empress (1pm to 1:30pm).
Besides the Faerie enthusiasm, attendees may enjoy live bluegrass music by Blue Mafia (11am to 12:45pm) and folk music by Maiden Radio (2pm to 4pm). A Tai Chi demonstration is scheduled at 1:30pm. Native artists will be displaying and selling their crafts. Nature oriented groups from the community such as The Kentucky Bluebird Society, Kentucky Native Plant Society, Magnificent Mushrooms will also have booths to share info and entertainment.
And don't forget the annual Plant Sale happening all day long where you can pick up flora straight out of Bernheim (list of available plants can be found here). The sale starts at 8am for members and 9am for everyone else. All plants are propogated from Bernheim's collection, therefore suitable and native to north central Kentucky climate.
All festivities take place at the Visitor Center. BloomFest begins at 10am and lasts until 4pm. Event is free for members, $5 per carload of non-members.
