Maybe you are new to the city and want something to do after your workday has ended. Here is a list of some terrific dance options that are going on around town during the normal weekdays:
Monday Night Contra Dancing at Church of the Advent
No you read that right, CONTRA dancing. Ever tried it? Well you should! Contra dancing is a form of line dancing; it's fast and there is a LOT of spinning going on. I have so much fun whirling about the floor that eventually my lips stick to my teeth. I just can't stop smiling and laughing! The Louisville Country Dancers gather every Monday night at Church of the Advent 901 Baxter Ave 40204 (you do not have to be affiliated with the church or any religion to join). Beginner lessons start at 7:30 p.m. and things get cooking around 8 p.m. First timers get in for free and non members pay $6. Visit their website at http://www.
Tuesday Dance Party at Seidenfaden's
Evan Patterson and Jonathan Wood from the band Old Baby spin records at Seidenfaden's Cafe 1134 E. Breckinridge St. 40204. Things get started around 10 p.m. and there is no cover. It's more low key than the usual ruckus of a raging dance party. However you won't be able to resist the sounds these guys have selected once that needle drops.
Wednesday Ladies Night at Nowhere Bar
I really enjoy this dance floor, in particular I am a huge fan of all the A/C Nowhere Bar pumps onto the sweating masses. Nowhere Bar, located at 1133 Bardstown Rd. 40204, kicks off their Wednesday with a ladies night starting at 7 p.m. DJ Syimone spins 90's music all night and the cost to this playground of good times is free!
Wednesday Get Down w/ Sleepy T at Mag Bar
I heard a friend say once "I've seen everything from pajamas to a tuxedo at Mag bar"... AND IT'S TRUE! If you are looking for the wildest dance party in Louisville you have to go to Mag bar on a Wednesday night. Located at 1398 S. 2nd St. 40208 a $3 cover will give you entry into a world unlike any other. This bar is a little unconventional but Sleepy T pumps out great music to keep the dance floor crowded.
Thursday Night Salsa at Sky Bar
As a woman I can tell you there is nothing sexier then a man who knows how to spin me around on the dance floor. And salsa nights at Sky Bar is just where to find it! Located at 131 Breckenridge Ln. 40207 you can come in for $5 beginners lessons at 9 p.m., and there is a live Salsa band right after for $7 ($2 discount for people who participate in both). Xplosive Rhythms provides the instructors and has $10 lessons available at their studio throughout the week. Don't be intimidated, everyone starts out at the same place! Thursday Swing Dancing at Jim Porter's
Now I know what you are thinking "isn't that like old people dancing???", well you are wrong! I was surprised to find out just how young this crowd really is. The New Lou Swing Dance Community hosts free dance lessons every Thursday from 7 to 8 p.m. at Jim Porters 2345 Lexington Rd. 40206. No cover before 8 and only $2 afterwards. Don't be scared if you've never danced a day in your life, they have experienced teachers and love to show newcomers just how much fun this can be! Friday Late Night Disco w/ OKDeeJays at Zanzabar
Looking for something new and with a little less dubstep? I highly recommend Friday nights at Zanzabar with the OKDeeJays. I guarantee you will be surprised at all the music you've never heard before. These guys also play a host of other venues (you can even catch them on the radio!) but their Friday nights are some of my favorite. It's a terrific place to cut loose and dance all night without the usually chaos that is the Saturday night fare.
