Bernheim Arboretum and Research Forest welcomes returning Grandmaster M. O. Serikali, Ph.D., for another 10-week course of Tai Chi Chuan beginning May 27. This practice is an ancient Chinese art that strengthens both body and spirit with physical movement and mental concentration, and is one of the many opportunities at Bernheim that expands Bernheim's mission of connecting people with nature.
"Tai Chi and nature have to be part of our reality and humanity based on what we see, feel, and do," says Dr. Serikali. "The quality of life starts within." M. O. Serikali is the chief Tai Chi instructor for the Louisville Metro Health Department and has been teaching Tai Chi for over 40 years.
In honor of Dr. Serikali and the students of Tai Chi instruction at Bernheim, a garden near the historic silos at the Bernheim Education Center was dedicated to the practice of Tai Chi in nature. This garden is part of Bernheim's mission of connecting people with nature.
Anyone interested in learning about and practicing Tai Chi is welcome, but registration for the upcoming session is required, and is available up to the beginning of the fourth classes for the full fee of $85 for members of Bernheim, and $95 for non-members. The 10-week Tai Chi course will be held on Thursday evenings beginning May 27 through July 29, 2010 from 5:30 to 7:00.
Return to Bernheim on Friday, May 28 for a Birding Hike from 9:00 a.m. until Noon with experts Carl Bockman and Bill Friel for a casual birding adventure. Only $7 for members, and $10 for non-members, the hike is suitable for beginners and advanced birders alike, but registration is required.
