Louisville’s three candidates for mayor— Democrat Greg Fischer, Republican Hal Heiner and Independent Jackie Green—will debate one another this coming Wednesday, July 21, at Bellarmine University. WAVE-3 news anchor Scott Reynolds will moderate the mixed-format debate.
The first segment will involve a panel of students and local figures such as recently retired

editor David Hawpe, political commentator and attorney John David Dyche, posing questions to the candidates. The students will represent the Governor’s Scholars Program, which is in its seventh year of residence at the Bellarmine campus. This will follow with cross-questioning, with each of the three candidates asking two questions of the others, and then each candidate will have two minutes for a closing statement.
According to Bellarmine president Dr. Joseph J. McGowan, “Every election is important, but this one looms especially large because Louisville has had the same great mayor for nearly a quarter of a century and is now electing a new one.” He added that the debate will be a great learning event for both the community and the high school students in the Governor’s Scholars Program, which strives to develop Kentucky’s next generation of civic and economic leaders and to create models of educational excellence for teachers and students.
The debate will take place at 7 p.m. in Frazier Hall, 2001 Newburg Rd. Admission to the debate is free and open to the public. Seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis. The event will also stream live via Bellarmine TV,
