The life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. will be celebrated Tuesday, January 18 at Bellarmine University in the Highlands. While the January 15 birthday of the civil rights leader, minister and Nobel laureate is widely celebrated on Monday, this event will allow students and the community at large to continue the observance.
A march will leave the Campus Ministry office in Horrigan Hall (near Cafe Ogle in the first floor lobby) at 11 a.m., proceeding to Our Lady of the Woods Chapel on the west side of campus, where several members of the Bellarmine community will share their thoughts about King’s life and contributions.
Bellarmine’s affiliation with King is a longstanding one. Thomas Merton, the Trappist monk and peace activist who was associated with the university when it was Bellarmine College—and whose papers and artwork reside there still—was a frequent correspondent with King. It is said that the two planned to meet in 1968; however, King was assassinated in April of that year. Merton died eight months later.
