The Louisville Ballet 2014-2015 season started off this past weekend with a phenomenal performance of Giselle . I could not be more excited to see what their new artistic director, Robert Curran, has planned for the rest of the year.
Giselle is a beautiful and light hearted peasant girl who runs into Count Albrecht (disguised of course, what fairy tale doesn’t have a little bit of false identity to it?). However Hilarion, a woodcutter, has also fallen for this woodland knockout. After Hilarion exposes Albrecht, Giselle dies of a broken heart. Her spirit is then summoned by the Wilis, jilted spirits of young women who force men to dance to their deaths. Hilarion falls victim to the Wilis and Albrecht is next. But Giselle’s love sustains him until dawn breaks and the Wilis must retreat.
For those of you who have never been to a ballet, or who have never considered going; let me urge you to step out of your comfort zone and try something new. It’s not terribly long and boring, or something only high-minded old ladies with opera glasses attend: the ballet is for everyone, it’s a wonderful mix of modern entertainment and classic talent.
This amazing group of dancers have trained for years to perfect their bodies so that they might bring culture, art, and creative storytelling to an audience. Don’t believe me? I saw Giselle dance across the stage on one toe all while her other leg was extended… ONE TOE! The crowd erupted in applause. In fact that was not the only time the audience refused to hold in their appreciation and wonderment at the talent being displayed.
The Louisville Ballet does not perform every weekend, so if you have the opportunity to catch them I recommend doing so. Your favorite bar that you frequent will still be there, why not change it up next time? It’s also a great opportunity to support an amazing community and mingle with all kinds of folks. And although there is not a dress code I like to use it as an occasion to wear that one outfit that may be sitting in my closet. And last, but not least, here are some encouraging words from the new director himself:
“I urge you to watch these glorious dancers very closely as they explore the reality that exists in this story, as they delve into the complex beauty that exists in their characters, as they share their art and artistry with you, and as they strive to inspire you and fill you with hope. They are certainly an inspiration to me.”
Although Giselle ’s run is finished, there are still opportunities to catch the next show.
