After an impressive Independence Day duel with the Clippers that ended in a walk-off 13th inning victory for the Bats and a dominating performance Tuesday night, the Bats will try and sweep the 1st place Clippers tonight at Slugger Field.
There is nothing shabby about being seven games over .500. As a matter of fact, that’s usually good enough for 1st place in any division in the Majors – unless of course you’re in the AL or NL East with the Yankees and the Phillies. Yet, the Bats still find themselves a deflating 10.5 games out of first place.
Aside from a few inconsistencies at the mound, the Bats look very strong both defensively and offensively. With strong numbers and performances from the likes of Zack Cozart, Todd Frazier, Jeremy Hermida and Dontrelle Willis, the Bats are a championship caliber club if they all stay healthy.
So what will it take for the Bats to finish up in September atop the East? Honestly, stellar pitching from Gomez and McAllister will have to falter some, but more importantly, the Bats need to go on a hot streak. While the Bats are winning more than they are losing, they’ve not been able to put together the dominating streaks that the Clippers have throughout the first half of the season.
I’ve said it before; all of the pieces are there for the Bats. We’ll see if they can break out the brooms against the Clippers tonight at Slugger Field.
