Fireworks are usually reserved for Friday night home games at Louisville Slugger Field.

However, there are some Monday night. These, though, were of the emotional variety.

Louisville Bats manager Delino DeShields, and shortstop Eugenio Suarez, were both ejected in the sixth inning of Louisville’s 9-3 loss - which ended the Bats’ four-game winning streak - to visiting Norfolk.

Suarez was tossed after spewing obscenities in the direction of home plate umpire Chad Whitson from the dugout after being called out on strikes. DeShields was ejected moments later when he too came to have some words with Whitson, then some more for third base ump Joe Born.

DeShields didn’t go quietly into the humid night, though. Before he left the field he kicked dirt all over home plate, then tossed a dugout trash can onto the field.

Afterward DeShields said his eruption wasn’t so much a result of Whitson’s calls of balls and strikes as it was his team’s listless performance.

“It was more so because of the way we were playing,” he said. “It was just not the type of effort I was expecting from these guys after the way we finished our road trip.”

Louisville (17-21) entered its 10-game homestand coming off a victory at Charlotte last Thursday and a three-game sweep at Gwinnett over the past weekend. The Bats, however, looked a little road weary against the Tides (21-17), who had lost three of their last four. It wasn’t all Louisville’s fault, though.

Norfolk lefty Chris Jones threw seven solid innings - allowing three earned runs on five hits while walking three and striking out five - while the Tides’ hitters pounded four Bats pitchers for 15 hits.

Norfolk quickly built a 5-0 lead - scoring one run in the first, fourth and fifth frames and two in the third - against Louisville starter Josh Smith (0-1).

The Bats, who were hitless through the first four innings, battled back briefly in the fifth. That’s when Steve Selsky, who was activated off the seven-day disabled list earlier in the day (while infielder Josh Satin was placed on the DL), led off with a single to right field. Two batters later Jermaine Curtis singled to set the table for Yorman Rodriguez, who blasted a three-run homer onto the Overlook Deck in right-centerfield.

Two runs was as close as Louisville would get, though. Norfolk scored four more in the top of the sixth, including two when Rodriguez let a ball roll under his glove in center field.

So it didn’t come as a complete shock to see Suarez, then DeShields, lose it in the bottom of the inning.

The same two teams will meet again at 6:35 p.m. Tuesday night (lefty David Holmberg is scheduled to take the mound for Louisville) before closing out their three-game set at 11:05 a.m. Wednesday morning.
