Tonight marks game one of the World Series, I know this for several reasons. First of all, I try to keep up on sports and I’m a lifelong baseball fan and second the airing for that same commercial which proclaims, “legends are made in October” airs roughly 10,000 times a day on every cable channel on TV and has been for the past three months.
In any case, game one of the series is set for broadcast on Fox tonight. So, I thought it might be cool to look into an All-Time Louisville baseball team that I feel could beat either of this year’s teams. Keep in mind these are all athletes that were either born and/or raised in the Derby City.
1st Base: Chris Burke
A versatile player, Burke has had experience playing positions all over the field. It’s this kind of well-rounded quality that creates a strong first baseman. Burke has had stints with the Arizona Diamondbacks, Houston Astros and San Diego Padres so his experience is certainly helpful.
2nd Base: Billy Herman
Herman is a ten time All-Star selection, and a Cooperstown Baseball hall of famer, as a player and a well-versed manager. He provides the leadership and raw talent that this team would need.
Shortstop: Pee Wee Reese
A baseball hall of famer, ten-time all star selection and two-time World Series champion, the Manual grad’s stats speak for themselves.
3rd Base: Dan Uggla
The legendary Settle Mariner has been moved over from second to provide some added power in the infield. Uggla’s a two-time all-star selection, and has been a legend everywhere he’s gone, his power on offense and defense is hard to match, as such I had to get him in the infield.
Catcher: Dave Anderson
This infield utility player has found success in playing and managing in the pros, in addition he’s a World Series champion. His knowledge of the game makes him an apt catcher for this team.
Left Field: Pete Browning
The original Louisville Slugger, Pete Browning’s bat was and is hard to top honestly his placement on this team is a no-brainer.
Right Field: Jay Buhner
Buhner, an All-Star selection and Golden Glove winner, is a strong addition to any baseball club.
Center Field: Gus Bell
A four-time All Star and current Cincinnatti Reds Hall of Famer, Gus Bell provides a solid base on offense and defense.
Pitching Rotation:
Paul Byrd
Former All Star Selection
Scott Downs
Formerly, Kentucky’s Mr. Baseball
3. Sean Green
Current Milwaukee Brewer
4. Jon Rauch
Olympic Gold Medalist- 2000 in Sydney
5. Shawn Kelley
Current Seattle Mariner
