    Bit to Do

I wish this was sticker project, Candy Chang

Artist/Urban planner Candy Chang has been busy the last several years developing her relatively simple idea into a sizeable cause that is impacting urban areas around the country. Inspired by the abundance of empty and forgotten storefronts in New Orleans, Chang created red and white stickers, similar in design to the Hello My Name Is badges, with the title I Wish This Was and left a blank space for people to anonymously voice what they would want to fill these spaces. The idea has caught on to other cities and most recently has come to Louisville’s East Market District a.k.a NuLu. The stickers were spotted at 720 E. Market adjacent to the Green Building. Aside from the grammar police correcting the I Wish This Was to I Wish This Were (click here to read Chang’s take on its proper use), the best wish is for a grocery store. Insider Louisville published an article on how residents of the area have wanted to make this a reality for some time.

These stickers couldn’t have come at a better time. A one hundred page study was recently released to the Louisville Downtown Development Corp. by an independent urban planning team that was hired to find ways of upgrading the area east of downtown. Hopefully, they saw some of the stickers (minus the Sex Shop idea) and were subconsciously influenced by what the public wants/needs. Also, a thumbs up goes out to whoever had the idea of purchasing the I Wish This Was stickers and involving the community of downtown Louisville.

    About Julie Gross

I’m originally from Ohio, but have been a Louisvillian for half my life. I divide my time between hubby, 3 kids, too many pets, and the 930 Art Center. When I'm not, you'll find me running the trails in Cherokee or Jefferson Memorial Forest.
