Recently, there has been a major surge in the Mexican food scene in Louisville. We’ve seen some great places popping up within the last few years: El Camino, Guaca Mole, and Taco Punk are among them. I recently got to try a new place downtown called Wild Rita’s, and you’re going to want to check it out.
When I first arrived, I wasn’t so sure what to expect. It’s located on Market, but not quite within NuLu, which made it seem a little out of place. But once you walk in, it’s gorgeous and open—just very loud. (This is saying something, because I’m pretty loud. I felt like I had to scream everything to the person sitting directly across from me.)
My waiter was perfectly sweet and suggested I try the house margarita, which was amazing and surprisingly strong. (Side note: Wild Rita’s also serves a drink that comes to you on fire, of which I’ve heard only good things, but this pyrophobe opted out of that particular beverage.) After looking over the menu, I made the excellent choice of ordering the enchiladas—three tortillas filled and baked with Chihuahua cheese and topped with your choice of meat, which was both carnitas and beef in my case.
My enchiladas came with two sides, and my advice to everyone has been to get the corn and the papas con chipotle. A full cob of corn with the same cheese and dipped in sauce, it is unreal. The papas definitely had a kick to them, but were probably the best part of the meal. Coming in at $12 (which is on the cheaper end of their menu), my hunger was reasonably satisfied and overall I’d say it was worth the money.
The service was fast, too. Overall, if you haven’t made a trip to Wild Rita’s yet, do it. They have a happy hour from four to seven, Monday through Friday for an after-work dinner, and a full tequila bar.
Wild Rita’s is open for business Monday through Thursday from 11-10, Friday from 11 till midnight, Saturday from 4 till midnight, and Sunday from 4 till 9. Located at 44e East Market Street, it’s right in between downtown and Nulu. It’s great food and great people, so go grab some modern Mexican tonight!
