    Beef ribs at Momma's

I realized recently that I write about St. Matthews a lot, which is because I live in the area. There’s a great deal of greatness going on here, so I want everyone to know about what’s happening! A week ago, I finally made it over to Momma’s Mustard, Pickles & BBQ on Bauer Ave., and I have to say that the food was truly fantastic. Definitely some of the best BBQ in the whole city.

We ordered the slider platter and the beef ribs with macaroni and cheese. The sliders were large and a great option for sampling all the different proteins with the house mustard and pickles, both of which elevated each slider. I was impressed by the turkey, chicken, and pork. They were delicious. The brisket was a little dry, but what BBQ brisket isn’t a bit dry? It was delectable with the BBQ sauce. The only one I could have done without was the sausage – it was spongy and kinda flavorless. I’m saying something because everything else on the plate was fantastic, and the sausage just wasn’t on the same level. However, the beef ribs were huge and incredible. Truly awesome BBQ, and they looked like something out of the Flintstones. Seriously awesome.

The menu is very limited, likely because this place was developed from a food truck. They offer all the basics that typically go with BBQ, like macaroni and cheese, potato salad, green beans, etc. The macaroni and cheese was great, especially with a dab of the mustard. However, something I would really like to see is a BBQ place that offers healthier and more non-traditional side dishes, particularly some fresh vegetables. I think that would balance out all the protein and the niche of special sides would bring in some serious business. Just a thought!

Something really cool about this place is their “2% for Louisville” concept – they add a 1% surcharge to each order, which they match and give 2% of what they make to Louisville charities. You can go to their website and vote for your favorite charity to get a larger portion of the donations!

Catering and take out are available, and the pickles and mustard are for sale at only $4 each! The pickles are sweet, so I didn’t care much for them on their own, but with the BBQ, they were dynamite.

Pay them a visit – you won’t be sorry. I’ll definitely be back on a regular basis.
