No one knows the city of Louisville the way that born and bred Louisvillians do. There are a couple of threads on Reddit dedicated to giving newcomers the very best advice from those who know from experience. Here are some gems, in their own words:

ArMcK: “Go to at least one restaurant and small business you haven't been to before. Geocache. Get a map and explore every zip code. Get a map and explore every large open area on the map. Check with Greater Louisville Inc. visitor's bureau for tours like ghost tours and garden tours, etc. Check Meetup.com“

UmberLamp: “Wfpk. The Leo. Waterfront Wednesday (summer). Forecastle. Ollie's Trolley. Mag Bar. Bardstown Road (all of it). 21c. Never go to 4th street live.“

Wingnut150: “This is precisely the best way to learn the details of home. I rode all of Louisville through College.
EDIT: DO NOT ride your bike further West downtown than 9th street.
EDIT EDIT: DO NOT ride you bike further West downtown (and I'm talking about from Broadway North down town, excluding the riverwalk which is awesome)than 9th Street AT NIGHT...(frankly I stayed out of there during the daylight as well but that's just me)”

postscarcity: “Definitely ride west of ninth. People are totally cool if you don't fuck with them. The riverfront trail goes all the way to Shawnee and it gets better the further west you go. The west end has cool, cheap, often family friendly bars (but not the best for drink selection). I drove a taxi for years, and worked the west end daily, rarely had any issue, probably less than anywhere else. Go explore your city, all of it.”

MeanMuggin: “buy the louisville encyclopedia and then explore. it is THE best on anything and everything louisville, especially history. if you are interested in the development of louisville's culture and built environment, i really recommend that book.buy the louisville encyclopedia and then explore. it is THE best on anything and everything louisville, especially history. if you are interested in the development of louisville's culture and built environment, i really recommend that book.”

MizJekyll: “Do NOT eat at a national chain restaurant while in Louisville. There are hundreds of great places to eat, ranging greatly in price.”

    Put simply:
