The University of Louisville football team will try to wash out the bad taste of last week’s surprising loss at Virginia on Saturday afternoon, when they play at Florida International.

The Cardinals (2-1) should have to worry more about sunscreen than the Golden Panthers (1-2) while they’re in Miami taking a break from the Atlantic Coast Conference. Florida International lost its season-opener to Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) member Bethune-Cookman on Aug. 30 before bouncing back with a 34-3 win over Wagner, another FCS school. The Golden Panthers, who play in Conference USA, jumped out to a 16-0 lead on Pittsburgh last Saturday before the Panthers outscored them 42-9 in the final three quarters.

The game should give Bobby Petrino’s team a chance to work on the ample mistakes they made at UVA.

Here’s a quick look at what else there is to watch (or follow) in UofL sports this weekend:

    • The men’s golf team will continue play in the ACC/SEC Challenge, which began Thursday and is slated to end Sunday in Nashville.

    • The volleyball team (5-4) will play in the Rice Invitational II this weekend in Houston. The Cards face Stephen F. Austin at 1:30 p.m. Friday afternoon and the host Owls at 8 p.m. Friday night. They then battle Texas Southern at 11:30 a.m. Saturday.

    • The baseball team will close out the second week of its fall workouts with a pair of open scrimmages at Jim Patterson Stadium. The first one will be at 3 p.m. Friday with the second one set for 3:30 p.m. Sunday.

    • The ninth-ranked men’s soccer team (2-1-1) plays its ACC road opener at 7 p.m. Friday night at Boston College. Junior midfielder Ben Strong was named the ACC Men’s Co-Player of the Week earlier this week.

    • The women’s soccer team (3-4) hosts Syracuse in its ACC opener at 7:30 p.m. Friday night at brand new Lynn Stadium.

    • The 14th-ranked field hockey team (5-1, 0-1) hosts No. 1 North Carolina in its ACC home opener at 1 p.m. Saturday at Trager Stadium.

    • The women’s rowing team, which finished 17th in the NCAA Championships last year, has its first scrimmage Saturday at Indiana University. The squad officially opens its season Oct. 4, when it hosts the Red & Black Regatta.
