It was a rude welcome to the Atlantic Coast Conference road for the University of Louisville football team, as well as a rude awakening for its fans.
A late field goal - on the heels of the Cardinals’ fourth turnover - lifted Virginia to a 23-21 win over 21st-ranked UofL on Saturday in Charlottesville, Va.
Luckily for Cards’ fans that was the low point for Louisville athletics in an otherwise successful weekend. Here’s a quick look back at all the results from the weekend:
- The 11th-ranked field hockey team split a pair of matches in Virginia. Friday night ninth-ranked Virginia outlasted Louisville 3-2 in double-overtime in the Cards’ ACC opener despite goals from Alyssa Voelmle and Megan Anstotz. Two days later, though, freshman Nicole Woods’ goal gave UofL a 4-3 overtime win at William & Mary. Voelmle tallied two goals in regulation and Mallory Mason added another.
- The volleyball team won two out of three matches at the Comfort Inn and Suites Invitational at Morehead State. The Cards started things off with a upset of 15th-ranked Arizona State on Friday afternoon. They swept the Sun Devils 3-0 behind Janelle Jenkins’ 12 kills and Katie George’s double-double (29 assists and 12 digs). UofL followed that up with a 3-0 sweep of the host Eagles that night. Jenkins again led the way with 10 kills. The Cards couldn’t complete the clean sweep, though, as Northern Illinois outlasted Louisville 3-2 Saturday afternoon despite 14 kills and seven blocks from Tess Clark.
- The men’s cross country team took second, while the women’s team finished fifth, in Vanderbilt’s Commodore Classic on Saturday in Nashville. The men, who finished behind Middle Tennessee State by 18 points, were led by the trio of Edwin Kibichiy, Ernest Kibet and Japhet Kipkoech, who finished second, third and seventh, respectively. Meanwhile Benadate Cheruiyot’s ninth-place finish led the women’s squad.
- The women’s soccer team lost at Morehead State 2-0 on Friday, but bounced back with a 3-2 overtime triumph over Kent State on Sunday afternoon at Lynn Stadium. Freshman forward Alison Price scored the game-winning goal 1:58 into OT for UofL (3-4), which rallied from a 2-0 halftime deficit to end its three-game losing skid.
- Men’s tennis players Sebastian Stiefelmeyer and Albert Wagner won their respective singles divisions and Stiefelmeyer and Michael Lippens captured a doubles title Sunday at Duke’s Fab Four Invitational.
- The women’s tennis team had a solid showing in the Miami (Ohio) Invitational, which ended Sunday in Oxford, Ohio. Ariana Rodriguez, Manuela Velasquez and Chloe Willetts had singles victories for the Cards.
