There has been a lot of chatter about building a children's museum in Louisville. WHAS and WDRB have profiled the Louisville Children's Museum, local businesses like Uptown Art, Comfy Cow, and The Artist in You have hosted fundraisers, and the Facebook page is a growing source of information and ideas.
The bottom line is that Louisville doesn't have a dedicated museum for multi-disciplinary learning for pre-readers; that is, tots through elementary-age children. But smaller markets like Columbus, IN, Lexington, KY and Tuscaloosa, AL do have children's museums. And a recent survey hosted by LCM showed that 78% of respondents left Louisville in 2012 to visit another city's children museum. Yikes--that's money that could be in Louisville's pocket.
Maybe you have questions about the Louisville Children's Museum. Maybe you have ideas that could help propel this project forward. Or maybe you would simply like to get involved or volunteer but don't know where to start. In any case, plan on attending one of two community information meetings this March:
- Friday, March 8 at 7:00 pm at the Metro Economic Development and Growth office, 444 S. Fifth St.
- Sunday, March 24 at 3:00 pm at the St. Matthew's Library, 3940 Grandview Ave.
They say it takes a village. If this project is to get off the ground, it'll take a city. YMCA and JCPS have already written letters of support for the project. These community information meetings, conveniently scheduled downtown and in the East End after work and on the weekend, should provide loads of information for interested businesses, non-profits, parents, and grandparents.
