He was born on the bayou. At birth he was known better by his given name Troy Andrews, now music fans and festival goers around the world know him as Trombone Shorty.
Trombone Shorty is a 29 year old trumpet and trombone player from New Orleans, LA, with music in his veins as the grandson of storied singer/songwriter Jessie Hill. The Big Easy has always been known as a cultural and musical mecca that has nurtured some of the finest musicians the country has ever known – celestial names like Louis Armstrong, Allen Toussaint, and Dr. John – and now, not even 30 years old, Trombone Shorty has carved out his own niche in a rich tradition of musicians that have made New Orleans proud.
Shorty began releasing solo album in 2002, and has been consistently releasing albums, as well as continuing to collaborate with artists of every genre. He has spent the last two years on the road in support of his most recent critically acclaimed album, 2013’s “Say That to Say This.” The record highlights the rich traditions of his beloved New Orleans, as well as presents variations on a theme from the musical mind of a visionary.
Shorty has worked with artists like U2, Green Day, Jeff Beck, and Lenny Kravitz. He has appeared on the shows “Treme,” “Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip,” and most recently on the Foo Fighters docu-series “Sonic Highways.” He has performed on every major television show, including “Conan,” “Austin City Limits,” and “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” He has received the President’s Medal from Tulane University, and been a featured player at The White House’s “Red, White, & Blues” concert.
Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue will be performing at Mercury Ballroom Wednesday May 13th. The show begins at 8:00 PM and tickets are still available for $30.
