Broadway Across America’s season is in full swing and next on the docket is Once, winner of 8 Tony awards (including Best Musical), 4 Drama Desk awards, and the Grammy for Best Musical Theater Album.

With such an assortment of prestigious awards, I wondered why I didn’t know anything about this musical. After researching, I found out that one of my favorite British actors, Arthur Darvill actually replaced the male lead in the London production. Intrigued, I read more.

From what I gathered, Once is a tale of love, but, as it always is, love is complicated. A Dublin musician pining over his ex-girlfriend (who recently moved to New York City) is about to give up on his music career altogether when a new woman walks into his life. As romance blossoms between them so does music, but complications arise when he moves to New York City to try to make it as a musician and their respective exes want to reconcile.

The music, written by Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová, is actually played by the actors themselves, eradicating the need for an orchestra. Apparently, the set is also minimalistic in nature. It sounds as if this production doesn’t need the frills and fancies of Broadway to make an impression.

Based on a film of the same name, Once has traveled the world with various productions since its inception in 2011 including off-Broadway, Broadway, London’s West End, Dublin, Melbourne (Australia), Seoul, Toronto, and our U.S. tour.

I’m excited to see what the U.S. tour brings to Louisville, and I certainly plan on viewing the movie before going to the show.

Broadway Across America will bring Once to the Kentucky Center from January 20th-25th of 2015. Tickets start at just $28 and are on sale now at the Kentucky Center’s website. For more information about the show, visit Broadway Across America’s official website.
