Originally born Horst Cimco, Riff Raff has come into late over the past four years. Most recently he’s joined mega DJ and Major Lazer’s brainchild Diplo to create a sound that’s really like nothing else going right now. When I first was exposed to Riff Raff I didn’t think he was real. Some old school rap hooks, beats, and cheesy rhymes that lean to his fictional character persona and were accentuated by his first group, Three Loco, where he teamed up with comedians Simon Rex and Andy Milonakis. Imagine a more Southern rap sounding version of Andy Samberg’s The Lonely Island and you’ll get a sense of Riff’s beginnings.
“I’m the white Gucci Mane with a spray tan…” may be one of my favorite lyrics off the new album Neon Icon. That should certainly give you an idea of what you’re in for. File alarm sound bites, sleigh bells, the works. It’s comical to me but fun as hell. He’s collaborated with a white raptress named Lil Debbie for the love of ho-hos! On his Neon Icon he’s joined by the likes of Childish Gambino, Mike Posner, Slim Thug and Paul Wall that really further solidifies his presence in the rap game. I’ve got friends that truly like his music, can see past his bizarre tattoos that include logos of MTV, BET and the NBA, so stay tuned for when I report back. Bart Simpson gold chain wearing, I expect tonight to be a spectacular event of people watching and more importantly discovering what Riff Raff’s all about. I’d encourage you to join me.
