    Modern Sushi at Hiko-A-Mon
    Print this page

Tucked back inside Westport Village is a small sushi bar and fish market called Hiko-A-Mon. The ingredients are fresh and organic, the dishes are modern works of art with traditional Japanese and French influences, and the service is always fantastic.

The menu is extensive, with plenty of choices for everyone from adventurous sushi eaters to the “I came to a sushi bar with my friends to be polite, I’m afraid, and I want fried rice” folks. I could probably write a novel about everything I like here, so I’m just going to tell you about my 3 favorite sushi rolls, 2 of which I think I have ordered 7 times without a trace of shame. Why always try something new when you find something you love?

+ The “Island” Roll – Served cool with crab and avocado inside, this roll is drizzled with a delectable honey-lemon sauce and topped with fresh, juicy slices of strawberry and mango. It’s a very lady-oriented sushi roll that I crave constantly.

+ The “Westport” Roll – Arriving at your table delightfully warm, this roll is stuffed with tempura shrimp, cream cheese, and crab, then topped with ripe mango, plump ahi tuna, and the same delicious honey-lemon sauce from the island roll.

+ The “Angel Shrimp” Roll – This warm, gorgeous tower of goodness was a wonderful discovery the last time I ate here, and it will definitely be on my plate next time I stop in. Just-fried tempura shrimp are snuggled up in pink soy wrapper with buttery avocado, then the roll is sliced, stacked, drizzled with spicy mayo and eel sauce, and topped with a generous pile of crab.

These three are great separate, but are truly spectacular as a trio. Served alongside pickled ginger, wasabi, and a refreshing little bunch of radish sprouts, they’ll all arrive on one plate, giving you a chance to get closer to your handsome (or pretty) date!

For me, a key difference between a good restaurant and a great one is consistency in the quality of their dishes. The Island and Westport rolls are the exact same every time I order them. I get very grumpy when restaurants change the dishes I love, so I truly appreciate Hiko-a-Mon’s attention to detail. I know that I’m going to get exactly what I came for each time I dine here.

When we walked in, there were maybe 2 or 3 other tables full, but by the time our check arrived, the place was buzzing without a single empty seat on a Wednesday evening. With sushi and service this good, I can see why. Go see for yourself!
