    Eat & Swig

There are feelings worse than the ones that rattle you when you’re suddenly hit by the need for sushi, but have no idea where to find the nearest/cheapest/best place to go. Don’t worry; I’ve done some research for you.

    Oishii Sushi
    2810 Taylorsville Rd

My first stop for sushi is Oishii, located on Taylorsville Road, across from Bowman Field. Not only is the sushi delicious, but the fish always tastes fresh and the servings are huge. The menu includes a few creative dishes – including a fruity dessert roll – but also includes many of the ol’ standbys. Check the specials, as rolls and other orders can be priced as low as 5 dollars. General prices per roll range roughly from $7 - $12. Do yourself a favor and try the firecracker roll, or pretty much anything deep-fried.

    Hiko-a-mon
    1115 Herr Lane, Suite 130

If you’re near Westport Village, stop by Hiko-a-mon. The posh atmosphere makes this a great place to take a date, have a dinner meeting, or just enjoy one of the many wine options they offer. They’re general entrées are a little pricey (then again, I have never ordered a rack of lamb, so who am I to judge?), but their sushi rolls run about the same prices as Oishii’s. The cardinals roll is a personal favorite, and it should be known that their tempura is perfect.  I also heard a rumor that the Comfy Cow supplies them with their desserts – green tea and red bean ice creams.

    Dragon King’s Daughter
    1126 Bardstown Road
202 East Elm New Albany, IN

Dragon King’s Daughter offers two locations, one on Bardstown Road and one in New Albany.  The restaurant offers a comfortably modern atmosphere that works well in clutter of Bardstown Road. Their kimchi tacos are to die for, but they also have a large sushi selection that ranges from $6-$14. For those who don’t like the idea of eating raw fish – or any fish – there is a substantial vegetarian sushi selection. Also be sure to check out DKD’s daily happy hour (3pm-6pm). You won’t regret it.

    Sakura Blue
    4600 Shelbyville Rd

After a day of shopping, drag your kids to Sakura Blue, where they can enjoy the hibachi grill and you can enjoy some sushi. Kid friendly, the restaurant is conveniently located and features a relaxed atmosphere.  While they have a diverse sushi menu, their vegetarian options are slim. The orange halves they serve at the end of your meal came as a nice surprise and are actually very refreshing. Check them out the next time you’re out shopping.

    Sapporo
    1706 Bardstown Rd

Be sure you check out the Happy Hour specials, when you can get not only discounted food, but half off on all bottles of wine. On top of this, Sapporo offers a long list of sushi options, many catering to the vegetarian crowd. Diners can also sit at the hibachi grill (Bardstown Rd location only) The modern atmosphere makes it a cool place to hang out for dinner or lunch – be sure to check the business hours, though – The Bardstown Rd location is only open for dinner.

Please don’t settle for pre-packaged sushi, no matter how desperate you are for a fix. Head to one of these restaurants the next time you feel the call of the ocean.
