Summer art camp sign ups in full swing

One day (soon?) it will warm up outside. Coinciding with this long-awaited change in weather will be the dawn of summer vacation--a welcome break for both you and your children. Although it's difficult to start planning those long summer days now (heck, I don't even know what we're doing for Spring Break, and it starts in less than a week!), registration for summer camps is in full gear. It's time to register now!

Here's a brief round-up of Louisville Visual Art Association's summer art camps:

Children in grades 3-5 can sign up for Folk Art (June 17-21), Crafty Crafty! (June 24-28), Printing and Painting (July 8-12), Pulp it Up! (July 15-19), and Music Around the World (July 22-26). New this year, LVAA is partnering with Jefferson Memorial Forest to bring elementary schoolchildren a new outdoor art camp experience. For more information or to register (class caps at 15 campers!), call the Jefferson Memorial Forest Welcome Center at 368-5404.

Middle schoolers in grades 6-8 can take Clay Camp (June 10-13 construction, June 17-18 for glazing), Sequential Art and Paper Sculpting (June 17-22), Woodworking, Sculpture & Collage and Dynamic Drums (June 24-28), Creativity City! and Yard Art (July 8-12), Storytelling Through Art and Digging into Drama (July 15-19), and Me, Myself & I: Visual Art and Drama (July 29-August 2).

Tuition is $195 for members or $220 for non-members. (Memberships are $40 for individuals, $60 for families and $25 for seniors/students, so it might be a good bet to join LVAA.)

Class locations vary; most are at the Clifton Center (2117 Payne Street) or Kentucky School of Art (849 S. 3rd St.). Check here for more details, including tuition, location, and course description. A registration form and class description are also available here.

This isn't a traditional week-long art camp, but once I read about this cool movie making opportunity on August 3 from 9:00 am-4:00 pm, I couldn't help but include it. Check Groupon now for a great deal at Popcorn Media's Movie Star Workshop. For $99, your child will spend the day with a Hollywood director (hmmm…doesn't say who) and crew learning the skills to rehearse and film their own movie. Any kid interested in film productio--behind the camera or in front of i--might want to check out this cool experience.

June will be here before you know it!

    About Anna Frye

After living in Chicago, Mississippi, South Carolina, and Colorado, my husband and I made our (hopefully? probably?) final move back to Louisville, where I was born and raised. Ahhh...it's nice to be home. Now I'm busy making sure my three little ones learn to love the quirks and traditions of their new hometown: Kentucky Derby Festival, no school on Oaks Day, grits and hot browns (not necessarily together), monograms, parks, festivals, and even our seasonal allergies.
