I took a trip up to Starlight, Indiana with my mom, sister, and a friend to my late Uncle Joe Huber’s farm, Joe Huber’s Family Farm & Restaurant, to eat lunch and get some of those juicy sweet strawberries. Yes, they are ripe and ready to be picked.
I was surprised how busy the farm was for a mid-week Tuesday afternoon. The tractor was very busy shuttling people out to the strawberry field to u-pick the strawberries. A concept the late Joe Huber Jr. first brought to Starlight, Indiana. The shuttles were full going out and coming back in with people carrying baskets of juicy, ripe, red strawberries. The little kids were walking in with the tell tale signs of red mooshed berry juice about their mouths and hands where they just could not resist sampling some of the sweet berries out in the field. Already picked strawberries are available also in the farm market. For more information on strawberry picking at the The Joe Huber Family Farm & Restaurant you can call the farm at (812) 923-5255. The Farm is located at 2421 Engle Rd., Starlight, IN. 47106.
As a Huber family member whose father grew up on that farm, Joe’s older brother Charlie was my father, there are a lot of memories of picking strawberries and having homemade strawberry ice cream hand churned with fresh cream when I was a young girl hanging out at the farm for family reunions. I have plans for my strawberries - homemade strawberry jam, strawberry shortcake, frozen strawberry daiquiris.
Do I have your stomach growling yet for some of those sweet juicy strawberries? Well you can also get your craving filled for strawberries in Starlight on Saturday, May 26, when St. John the Baptist Church Parish in Starlight, Indiana, puts on their Annual Strawberry Festival. To get the full schedule of the festival events go to their website here. St. John the Baptist Church is located at 8310 St. John Rd., Starlight, Indiana.
